Mystery Book Recommendations

March 31, 2021

Are you looking for a personally recommended mystery book for your next read? Librarian Mary H. has compiled a list of her personal recommendations in a variety of mystery genres. May this help you find what you’d like to read next!

Looking for a new favorite detective?

Meet Armand Gamache, a series by Louise Penny. The latest installment is All the Devils Are Here, in which Gamache finds himself in a new setting, Paris, helping solve the murder of his godfather Stephen Horowitz and in the process learns more about the man and secrets that played out in Gamache’s life. Another engaging tale from a beloved author. Find in the catalog here.

Looking for a new cozy mystery series?

Mary recommends the Meg Lanslow series by Donna Andrews. A favorite? The Falcon Always Wings Twice, in which Grandfather is the prime suspect when a man who mistreated Grandfather’s falcons is found murdered at the Renaissance Faire put on by Cordelia.. The usual mayhem ensues and all our favorite characters play a part in solving the mystery. Always light-hearted and fun this addition to the series delivers. Find in the catalog here.

Looking for a good police procedural?

Try the John Rebus books by Ian Rankin – particularly, A Song For the Dark Times. Is this going to be the end of Rebus? This crime novel has a double plot and on the surface it appears there is no connection between the two.  Is there? Some questions will be answered in the end but one important one is left standing. Find in the catalog here.

Looking for a fun caper?

Start the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. In the latest, Fortune and Glory: Tantalizing Twenty-Seven, Grandma Mazur gets married! Unfortunately, her new husband dies on their wedding night and then the fun begins.  A hunt for his treasure begins and hijinks ensue as any follower of Stephanie Plum would expect. Find in the catalog here.

Looking for a paranormal mystery?

Check out the Charlie Davidson series by Dayrnda Jones. In First Grave On the Right, Charlie Davidson sees dead people. Sometimes the dead people have been murdered and they want Charlie’s help to get justice. Paranormal, romance, mystery – this first in a series has it all and then some. The book is well-written and it is lots of fun. Fortunately, there are more so you won’t be disappointed when you come to the end. Find in the catalog here.
